Winters are sometimes long in Anchorage. With this year's cool summer and early cold temperatures, it was looking like my gladiolas were not going to bloom if I left them outside in late Semptember. So, I tried an experiment. Into the house they came. They were given a special spot where they could still get plenty of sunlight during the day, but not freeze at night. It worked and I was rewarded with blossoms even while one of the early snows was descending.
Then I completed a task that could have been done months ago. I repotted my Christmas Cactus. I first potted it more two years ago when Dad gave me three small starts when I visited him in Olympia. The plant really had outgrown its small pot, but the outdoor plants had priority during the brief summer. So in late September I repotted the Christmas Cactus and took it to my office where it could hang in a west-facing window. I was hoping the location would suit it better than where it had been in the house. I was promptly rewarded with many lovely blossoms. The photography doesn't do them justice, but I hope you can appreciate their beauty!
